Legacy Speech & Debate Code of Conduct

  • Be on time for club and come prepared.

  • Be an active participant in club meetings.

  • Be willing to stretch your comfort level and try new things.

  • All comments on another’s performance/work must be of an encouraging and constructive nature.

  • The room is a no-tech learning zone with the exception of teaching tools. Debaters can bring computers for the purpose of research and note taking.

    • No cell phones, texting, or unrelated internet activity.

    • Please step out of the room if you need to make a call or use your cell phone for private matters.

  •  Refrain from gossiping about others and encourage others to do the same. 

  • Treat everyone – whether present or absent – with respect. 

  • Seek to have your speech and actions reflect the character of Christ. 

  • Club dress code will be modest at all times and will be professional at events. 

  • Remain in tournament attire for the duration of all tournaments. 

  • Always support other competitors (club members or not) by watching rounds when available. 

  • At tournaments, reach out to new and out-of-state competitors and make them feel welcomed. Leave every location better and cleaner than how you found it. 

  • Be gracious and Christ-honoring whether you win or lose.

Family Requirements

  • Students are to attend club weekly.

  • Parents are to attend monthly and will be given a specific role in which to serve **exceptions to this will be made on a case-by-case basis** 

  • Students are to do all assigned homework. Parents, help your child with their homework as needed. 

  • 1st year Students are to compete in 1+ Speech events in the local tournament (impromptu speech is recommended).

  • 2nd year Students are to compete in 2 + Speech events, Impromptu is required for 2nd year students.

  • Parents are required to judge at the local tournament 

  • Families must participate in fundraising.

Stoa Tournaments

Tournaments are an intrinsic part of speech and debate training (“We compete to train, not train to compete”) and are NOT optional. We will be hosting a local tournament at the end of January (the date has yet to be set in stone) and will require each of our Legacy students to compete.
